This week, Interface[s] Montréal presented its fifth demo-conference of the year on the topic of Visualisation with numerous participants and speaker-experts in attendance.
During his introduction, Éric Raymond (Artist, Professor, École des Arts Visuels et Médiatiques, UQAM) forced us to reflect on the consequences generated by technological changes over the last few decades. According to Mr. Raymond, due to the calculated way in which modelling is applied – to the detriment of our powers of observation – our intuitive relationship has lost its status as an epistemological paradigm.

Éric Raymond started his presentation by stating that the field of electronic visualisation, which is in full expansion, was initiated by certain paradigm shifts that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. As a result of these changes, our intuitive relationship with our environment has lost its status as the most important epistemological paradigm. Phenomena are now calculated as opposed to being observed, thus initiating a break in the modeling process and providing calculation tools with their newfound status of utmost importance. This occurrence also generated significant technological expansion with computer technologies following suit.
