Interactivity is not only an indication of the recreational and magical powers of the digital age, it also enhances the realism and potential of virtual immersion environments by instilling cognitive and instrumental simulations and a feeling of personal involvement. It allows humans to inhabit the synthetic environment – linking artificial intelligence, memory and life in a new configuration so powerful that it can unite multiple contributors to a community of practice via a network. Though decidedly bland and somewhat simplistic in its infancy, interactivity has evolved considerably over the last twenty years and is now a determining factor in the creation of the new digital realism destined to enhance the algorithmic utopia of our times.
