Using Cubing projects and artificiel.process, Alexandre Burton has developed a practice in which the manipulation of digital parameters is intimately related to scenic presence. Gestures in a scene are justified as a continuous expressive link, not as an opening or as a technical necessity. To this end, a material and logical construction is developed with the central preoccupation being sensitivity and transparency. This approach is aligned with Shusterman’s interpretation of Dewey’s pragmatic aesthetics. Thus, all the information a performer uses is seen by the public, which enables the creation of an useful context for the artistic experience, as much for improvisation as for interpretation.
Alexandre Burton is interested in whether technology brings a new sensibility to the digital. Through performances and installations, his work touches essentially on the definitions and organization of the relationships between different modes of expression. Complementary to his artistic work with the Artificiel group, he works regularly as a consultant on projects which require subtle and pertinent integration of mediating technologies.
